At Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation, some of our most impactful support comes from the quiet, generous work of volunteers giving their time, skills and care for others.
Recently, our incredible Pink Army volunteers came together in Kotara for a special Comfort Cushion sewing day, creating nearly 300 handmade comfort cushions for people recovering from breast cancer surgery.
A day powered by compassion and community
Held at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Kotara, the sewing day brought together volunteers who cut, sewed and hand‑stuffed each cushion with care. These cushions are designed to provide physical support after surgery, while also offering comfort during a deeply vulnerable time in a person’s recovery.
Honouring a legacy led by Jane Harris
The Comfort Cushion program has been part of Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation since the very beginning.
The sewing day was led by long‑time volunteer , a founding member of HBCF who has guided this program since the organisation’s inception in 1999.
For nearly 27 years, Jane and her dedicated volunteer group have lovingly made comfort cushions for thousands of local people, continuing a legacy of compassion that sits at the heart of our organisation.
HBCF General Manager reflected on Jane’s contribution and the importance of the day.
“These comfort cushions may seem simple, but they make a meaningful difference during a very vulnerable stage of recovery,” Ms Ross said.
“Jane has been at the heart of this program since the very beginning, and her dedication, alongside our incredible volunteers, is what makes this support possible.”
Responding to growing demand
As more Hunter locals reach out for support, the demand for comfort cushions continues to grow. While HBCF typically distributes around 500 cushions each year, increasing need is placing added pressure on both volunteer capacity and program funding.
Days like this play a vital role in helping us meet that demand and ensure people facing breast cancer receive practical support when they need it most.
Thank you to Port Waratah Coal Services
This program would not be possible without the generous support of Port Waratah Coal Services, whose ongoing sponsorship helps ensure the Comfort Cushion program can continue to support people across our region.
Their partnership enables volunteers to focus on what they do best – caring for the community through skill, time and compassion.
A reflection of our community at its best
The Comfort Cushion sewing day was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose.
From the dedication of our Pink Army volunteers, to the leadership of , and the generosity of Port Waratah Coal Services, this program is a true example of local people supporting local people through one of life’s most challenging experiences.
